»» Italian-American Festivals: St. Joseph’s Feast in Boston

Thanks to the “Società San Giuseppe di Riesi“, the feast of St. Joseph in Boston is making a strong comeback next weekend.

Boston North End

About two dozen young recruits, many from the suburbs, will descend on the North End to take turns carrying the 100-pound icon through neighborhood streets for next Sunday’s six-hour procession.

It’s all about paying homage in this cultural enclave of Boston, where the older generation is teaching a younger one how to honor the patron saint of their Sicilian ancestors. “Each little village brought their saint with them, It was like bringing their church here. It was like bringing a part of them here.” said Pamela Donnaruma, editor and owner of the North End’s Post-Gazette newspaper.

This fund-raising feast kicks off next Friday, July 27.
